Bremen's Schwaren was a copper fractional denomination so negligible in value that striking a silver pattern of it in 1781 was essentially an exercise in absurdity — done for presentation or collector interest rather than any genuine monetary proposal. The city's monetary autonomy as a Free Imperial City meant its mint could indulge such curiosities without external approval. At 25 mm across for under a gram of silver, the proportions alone betray its nature as a showpiece.
