Bremen's Schwaren was a hyper-local denomination that survived well into the nineteenth century largely because the city-state resisted monetary harmonization with its neighbors for as long as politically feasible. By 1859, German unification pressures were mounting, and Bremen's independent coinage was on borrowed time — the city formally adopted the Thaler system just a few years later, rendering these small copper pieces obsolete almost immediately after striking.
