Obverse description A large upright key occupies the center of the field, its bow rendered in a decorative squared meander or fret pattern, dividing the date 18 59 to either side. The key, a traditional heraldic emblem of the Free City of Bremen, is depicted in fine relief against a plain field. No legend appears on this face; the date serves as the sole inscription, flanking the key shaft.

Additional information

Bremen's Schwaren was a hyper-local denomination that survived well into the nineteenth century largely because the city-state resisted monetary harmonization with its neighbors for as long as politically feasible. By 1859, German unification pressures were mounting, and Bremen's independent coinage was on borrowed time — the city formally adopted the Thaler system just a few years later, rendering these small copper pieces obsolete almost immediately after striking.
