Obverse description Central device features the shield of the Livonian Order — a quartered escutcheon bearing a cross — set within an inner beaded circle. The shield is surrounded by the legend MONET · RVALIE · (Moneta Revaliensis, 'Coin of Reval') rendered in simple uncial Latin lettering. The field between the beaded inner circle and the coin's irregular flan is occupied by Gothic cross-like ornamental devices at the cardinal points. The overall style is characteristic of late medieval hammered billon coinage from the Baltic region.
