Thomas Schöning served as Archbishop of Riga from 1528 until his death in 1539 — the very year this coin was struck — placing this issue at the end of his tenure during one of the most turbulent periods in Livonian ecclesiastical history, as Lutheran reformers were actively dismantling Catholic institutional authority across the Baltic. The Archbishopric's minting rights at Koknese were already contested, and Schöning spent much of his archiepiscopate navigating conflict between the Livonian Order, the city of Riga, and the advancing Reformation.
The die varieties distinguishing this type — fancy cross, smooth top, staffs without border — are the primary tools for separating Koknese output from contemporaneous Riga mint production in this series.
