Sigismund III Vasa claimed the Polish throne in 1587 and the Swedish throne in 1592, making Riga — then a city of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth — a minting point caught between competing dynastic ambitions. His eventual deposition from Sweden in 1599 did nothing to interrupt Riga's output; the city continued striking under his Polish authority for decades. The billon schilling was the workhorse denomination of Baltic trade commerce, circulating across Livonia, Prussia, and into Muscovite markets.
