Struck upon the death of Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn in 1746, this sede vacante issue was produced during the interregnum before a new bishop was elected to the see. The Bishopric of Würzburg, as an ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Empire, held the right to strike coinage in its own name — and that right temporarily passed to the cathedral chapter during vacancies, which is the issuing authority behind this piece.
Würzburg's sede vacante issues are among the more precisely datable coins in German ecclesiastical numismatics, since the vacancy lasted only months.
