Additional information

Struck during the vacancy following the death of Bishop Johannes III Blankenfeld — who had not yet taken possession of the see — the Sede Vacante coinage of Dorpat was issued under chapter authority as was canonical custom when no ruling bishop held office. The Livonian bishoprics maintained this minting right jealously, and Dorpat's chapter exercised it with documented regularity across several vacancies in the early sixteenth century.

Haljak's classification places this among the rarest administrative coinages of the Baltic region.
