Reverse description The denomination is displayed across the field in three horizontal registers: the numeral I centered in the upper portion, flanked on each side by a six-petalled rosette ornament; below, the word SCHILLING in bold raised capitals spanning the mid-field; and beneath that, the date 1808 in large open numerals occupying the lower field. The layout is purely typographic with no figurative elements, consistent with a trial or pattern striking intended to test the die design.

Additional information

Danzig fell to Napoleon's forces in 1807 after a two-month siege, after which the city was reconstituted as a nominally free state under French protection — with Marshal François Joseph Lefebvre installed as its first Duke. This trial strike dates to the following year, when local authorities were exploring coinage for the new political arrangement. The series never entered full production, leaving trial pieces as the only physical record of that abortive monetary planning.
