The Bishopric of Dorpat — a Catholic ecclesiastical state centered on present-day Tartu, Estonia — was in terminal decline by 1541, caught between the expanding Muscovite state to the east and the pressures of the Reformation dismantling Catholic authority across the Baltic. Johannes VI, the last bishop to strike coins with any regularity, issued schillings like this one during a period when Dorpat's political survival was measured in years rather than decades. The diocese would effectively collapse with the Livonian War beginning in 1558, when Ivan the Terrible's forces overran the region.
