Obverse description At center, the shield of the Livonian Order — displaying a cross surmounted by a horizontal bar — set within a raised inner circle. The shield is rendered in a plain, unadorned style typical of late medieval hammered billon coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner beaded border, reading in abbreviated form the name and title of Johann von der Recke, Master of the Livonian Order. The coin's irregular flan and variable strike are characteristic of contemporary hand-hammered production.
