Hermann IV of Hessen held the archbishopric of Cologne from 1480 until his forced resignation in 1508, a tenure marked by chronic fiscal mismanagement and mounting debt to the city of Cologne itself. His coinage was struck under considerable financial duress, and the schilling issues of his later years reflect the archbishopric's diminished capacity — the 1.10g weight sits at the low end of what the denomination had historically commanded in the Lower Rhine monetary system.
The Noss and Saur references cataloguing two separate entries for this type suggest a die variety or mint differentiation, most likely between Bonn and the Deutz mint rights.
