Obverse description Central field displays the personal arms of Hermann V von Wied — the Wied family shield — superimposed upon the larger composite shield bearing the cross of Cologne, forming a heraldic inescutcheon composition. The surrounding circular legend in Latin records the titles of Archbishop Hermann V. The design is characteristic of early sixteenth-century hammered ecclesiastical coinage, with the armorial devices executed in a Gothic style typical of the Rhenish mints.
