Heinrich von Galen served as Master of the Livonian Order while Wilhelm von Brandenburg held the Archbishopric of Riga — their joint coinage reflects the uneasy dual authority over Livonia that defined the 1550s, just years before the Livonian War of 1558 shattered the entire political structure of the region. The Order and the Archbishop had spent decades in territorial and jurisdictional conflict; coins struck under both names were a deliberate assertion of unified front against growing Muscovite pressure.
The "smooth top" designation distinguishes this die variant from related issues with an ornamental top to the shield, a distinction catalogued separately in Haljak II.
