1561 was the final year of the Livonian Order's existence as a governing power. Facing military collapse under Russian pressure during the Livonian War, Grand Master Gotthard Kettler dissolved the Order and secularized its territories, converting Livonia into the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia as a Polish-Lithuanian vassal. Coins struck at Reval that year exist in an administrative limbo — issued under the Order's authority by an institution already negotiating its own abolition.
The "pointy bottom with rising sides" designation distinguishes this shield variant from contemporaneous Reval schillings in the same series, a distinction Haljak treats as cataloguable rather than merely incidental.
