| Descrizione del rovescio | Central field features a large ornate crown of late medieval form, rendered with considerable detail, occupying most of the inner circle defined by a beaded border. The legend MO · NOVA · REVAL · in Latin capital letters runs around the periphery, separated by pellet stops, identifying this as the new coinage of Reval. The flan is irregularly shaped and the strike is characteristic of mid-sixteenth century hammered municipal coinage, with areas of weakness at the edges. The overall style reflects the influence of Baltic civic minting conventions of the period. |

Reval — modern Tallinn — issued this schilling under Eric XIV's nominal authority during a period of acute political instability in the eastern Baltic. The city had submitted to Swedish suzerainty in 1561, defecting from a collapsing Livonian Confederation that could no longer defend itself against Russian expansion under Ivan the Terrible. Local minting rights were retained as part of the submission agreement, which explains why Reval continued producing its own coinage rather than relying on Swedish-struck issues.
The "without crown" distinction separates this from the Type 2 issue and is catalogued as a discrete variety by Haljak. Eric XIV was deposed in 1568, confined, and almost certainly poisoned in 1577.
