Additional information

Christoph Bernhard von Galen took control of Münster in 1650 following a prolonged and bitter capitular election dispute, and spent his early years consolidating power against a resentful city council. These schillings belong to that contentious opening phase of his rule, before he began the military campaigns that would eventually earn him the nickname "Bombenbernd" — derived from his enthusiastic use of artillery against his own cathedral city during the uprising of 1661.
