Anthony Günter ruled Oldenburg for an exceptionally long stretch — from 1603 until his death in 1667 — making him the last Count of Oldenburg before the county passed to Denmark. These schillings were struck during the middle years of the Thirty Years' War's opening phase, when the Holy Roman Empire's smaller territories were scrambling to maintain functioning local coinage as monetary chaos spread across the German states. Oldenburg itself remained nominally neutral for much of the conflict, which likely kept these coins in active regional circulation longer than issues from more embattled territories.
