Glarus was among the smallest and poorest of the Swiss cantons, and its brief autonomous coinage during the Helvetic interregnum reflects that constraint directly. The 1 Schilling denomination in billon — a debased silver alloy — was a practical concession to limited mint resources. The canton ceased independent issue within two years, absorbed into the monetary consolidation that would eventually produce the unified Swiss franc after 1850.
