Obverse description The arms of the Free City of Hamburg occupy the central field: a three-towered castle rendered in fine brickwork detail, with an arched gateway at the base. Each of the three crenellated towers is surmounted by a six-pointed star, the central star being of a slightly different form. The design is unframed and set against a plain field, with no surrounding legend.

Reverse description The denomination and issuing authority are displayed in three horizontal lines across the central field: the Roman numeral 'I' at the top, flanked by two small six-petalled rosettes, followed by 'SCHILLING' in large bold serif lettering, then 'HAMB. COUR.' on the next line, and the date '1851' at the base. The layout is clean and typographic, occupying the full field with no surrounding border legend.
