Obverse description A griffin passant to the left occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The griffin, the traditional heraldic emblem of the city of Rostock, is rendered in the late medieval style typical of North German municipal coinage. A Latin circular legend surrounds the inner circle, reading MONETA NOVA ROSTO(K)(E), identifying the coin as a new issue of Rostock.
