John Frederick ruled Pomerania-Stettin from 1569 until his death in 1600, a period during which copper small change was introduced across much of northern Germany to relieve chronic shortages of low-denomination silver. The Scherf — a pfennig fraction — was among the most heavily circulated and least preserved denominations of any German territorial coinage, lost to wear and attrition at a rate that makes even corroded survivors genuinely scarce.
