| Obverse description | Bracteate-style design featuring a concentric ring motif at center, consisting of an inner annular band enclosing a plain raised boss, the whole surrounded by a radiate outer border of evenly spaced radial projections resembling a toothed wheel or sun-ray arrangement. The flan is irregular in outline, characteristic of the hammered bracteate coinage of the Livonian ecclesiastical mints. Helmich von Mallinckrodt served as Bishop of Dorpat from 1459 to 1468, governing a see that sat uncomfortably between the competing pressures of the Livonian Order and the merchant interests of the Hanseatic League. The Scherf — the smallest denomination in regular Livonian circulation — was the coin of everyday market transactions, and Mallinckrodt's issues are among the most thinly documented of the medieval Dorpat series. Haljak's classification remains the primary reference for distinguishing episcopal issues of this period, given how heavily worn most surviving specimens are.
