1 Scherf - Ernest Louis

Ernest Louis ruled Pomerania-Wolgast as part of the fragmented Pomeranian ducal house, which by the late sixteenth century had divided the territory so many times that individual lines controlled territories barely capable of sustaining independent monetary production. The Scherf — a pfennig fraction — was the smallest copper denomination in circulation, issued largely to fill a chronic shortage of low-value coinage that silver mintage programs consistently ignored.

The Pomeranian line died out entirely in 1637 with the death of Bogislaw XIV, after which Brandenburg and Sweden carved up the duchy at Westphalia.
