Reckheim was a tiny imperial lordship wedged between the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and the Duchy of Gelders, and its mint operated almost entirely because the Holy Roman Empire's fragmented sovereignty made such operations legally defensible for petty lords. Ernest of Lynden issued in the name of Emperor Matthias — who reigned 1612 to 1619, precisely bracketing this type — a common practice that lent legitimacy to local coinage while technically acknowledging imperial authority. In practice, Reckheim's issues circulated regionally and were frequently the subject of complaints from neighboring monetary authorities about substandard fineness.
