Utrecht struck the scheepjesschelling — "little ship shilling" — as part of the fractional silver coinage that circulated heavily throughout the Dutch Republic's trade networks. By the mid-eighteenth century, provincial mints were operating with considerable autonomy, and Utrecht maintained its own output even as the Republic's finances deteriorated under the strain of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War and the ruinous costs of defending against French pressure. The fifty-plus year span of this type means die varieties are numerous, with Verkade cataloguing multiple obverse and reverse combinations across the series.
Utrecht's mint rights survived the province long enough that striking continued almost to the Batavian Revolution of 1795, which effectively ended the old provincial coinage system entirely.
