1 Satang - Rama VIII

Thailand's 1941 coinage was struck under extraordinary political pressure. The Japanese invasion of December that year forced the Phibun government into an alliance with Tokyo within hours of the attack, and coins already in production continued to be issued under a country that had, within months, effectively become a Japanese satellite. Rama VIII — Ananda Mahidol — was a teenager studying in Switzerland at the time, returning to Thailand only in 1945, meaning he never once presided over his kingdom during the years bearing his effigy.

He was found dead in his bedroom in June 1946 from a gunshot wound, the circumstances of which remain officially unresolved.
