Bullet coinage — of which this is a specimen — was produced in Thailand for centuries by folding a measured blank of metal and striking it into a compact, nugget-like form. The Salung was the quarter-Baht unit, and under Rama III the royal mint continued a production method essentially unchanged since the Ayutthaya period. Rama III's reign coincided with intensifying European commercial pressure and early Siamese engagement with Western traders, yet the monetary system remained deliberately insular until treaty obligations under Rama IV finally forced modernization.
The specific Prasat countermark distinguishes issues authorized under this reign's palace mint supervision.
