Issued in the years immediately following the 1970 palace coup in which Qaboos bin Said deposed his father Said bin Taimur, this gold rial belongs to the first coinage series issued under the new sultan's authority. Qaboos renamed the country from Muscat and Oman to the Sultanate of Oman in 1970 and undertook a sweeping modernization of the currency system, replacing the Maria Theresa thaler-based rial saidi with a decimalized structure. The multi-year issue window reflects phased production rather than continuous mintage.
