Obverse description The obverse depicts Edward IV standing full-length within a large sailing ship, facing forward and shown crowned, holding a sword in his right hand and a shield bearing the quartered royal arms of England and France in his left. The ship is rendered in fine detail with rigging, masts, and a decorated hull resting upon stylized waves. Roses and other heraldic ornaments appear on the ship's sides and rigging. The royal legend, rendered in Gothic uncial lettering, encircles the design within a beaded inner border, reading: ED · WARD' · DI · GRA' · REX · ANGL' · Z · FRAn · C DNS' · I · B' (Edward by the Grace of God King of England and France Lord of Ireland).
