The ruspone — a denomination unique to Tuscany — originated under Cosimo III de' Medici in the late seventeenth century as a triple zecchino struck specifically for prestige presentation and trade use. Under Leopold II of Habsburg-Lorraine, production resumed as part of a broader monetary reorganization following the disruptions of Napoleonic occupation, during which Tuscany had been absorbed into the French Empire as the Département de l'Arno. The series spanning 1824–1836 represents some of the last high-purity gold coinage struck before the monetary unifications that would follow Italian Risorgimento pressures later in the century.
MIR 444 records multiple date varieties within this run, with certain years carrying notably smaller mintage figures.
