| Additional information |
The Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Gesellschaft issued these rupees under its own authority before the German imperial government revoked the company's charter in 1891 and assumed direct colonial administration of the territory. The company had modeled the denomination deliberately on the Indian rupee to ease trade friction with British East Africa and the existing Zanzibar merchant economy — a practical concession to the realities of the regional market rather than any monetary ideology.
After the charter revocation, dies already prepared continued to be used, which accounts for the extended date range on a coin whose issuing authority had effectively ceased to exist within the first year of striking.
