| 表面の説明 | The face is printed in blue on a light underprint, with a coastal vignette of a palm-fringed beach at left and a terraced rice field vignette at right, flanking a central guilloche cartouche bearing the large numeral '1' and the denomination inscription 'SATU RUPIAH'. The heading 'REPUBLIK INDONESIA' appears across the top, with the legal tender clause 'TANDA PEMBAJARAN JANG SAH' and the issuing authority 'MENTERI KEUANGAN' above and below the central cartouche respectively. The date '1953' is printed at lower right, with ornate scrollwork corner devices framing the entire composition. |

| 裏面の説明 | The reverse is printed in blue, centred by an intaglio vignette of a volcanic mountain rising above a flat tropical landscape with palm trees and scrub vegetation at its base. Decorative Balinese-style scroll columns flank the central design on either side, and the heading 'REPUBLIK INDONESIA' is set within an ornamental banner across the top. A rectangular anti-counterfeiting text panel is positioned in the lower centre, with the printer's imprint 'SECURITY BANKNOTE COMPANY' at the foot of the note. |

Indonesia's early post-independence notes were printed abroad out of necessity — the country lacked domestic security printing capacity, and contracts were distributed across several foreign firms through the 1950s. The Security Banknote Company in Philadelphia handled a number of these commissions, though their involvement with Indonesian issues is less documented than that of larger contemporaries like De La Rue or Thomas De La Rue.
The 1 Rupiah denomination circulated heavily at the lower end of daily commerce and survival rates are correspondingly poor. High-grade examples are harder to source than the face value would suggest.
