Additional information

The Goa rupee series under José I occupied an awkward monetary position — Portuguese India ran parallel currency systems, with local rupia issues competing against circulating Mughal and Maratha coinage that the population trusted far more. The Crown's insistence on maintaining a Goan mint was as much about asserting administrative presence as meeting any genuine commercial need.

Gomes Jo 52 is among the more obtainable of the José I silver issues, though examples with clean fields are not routine — the Goa mint's quality control was inconsistent, and planchet preparation was frequently poor by metropolitan standards.
