| 裏面の説明 | The Portuguese royal coat of arms, consisting of the oval escutcheon bearing the five quinas arranged in a cross pattern, each charged with five plates, enclosed within a larger shield and surmounted by an open royal crown. The shield is flanked by elaborate foliate and floral mantling on both sides, all rendered in high relief in the hammered style of the Goa mint. The toothed border runs along the coin's rim. |

Struck at Goa under the name of João, Prince Regent of Portugal, who governed from Brazil after the royal court fled Lisbon ahead of Napoleon's invasion in November 1807. The Braganza court would not return to Portugal until 1821, leaving colonial mints like Goa operating under a regent who had never set foot in his Asian territories and was running an empire from across the Atlantic.
The decade-long emission range reflects the extended regency period before João was formally proclaimed king following his mother Maria I's death in 1816.
