Obverse description The obverse bears a multi-line Persian legend arranged in flowing Nasta'liq script across the field, reading: 'Sikka Zad Bar Haft Kishwur Sayaye Fazl Shah Alam Badshah Elah Hami Din Mohammad' (Defender of the Muhammadan faith, Reflection of Divine Excellence, the Emperor Shah Alam has struck this coin to be current throughout the seven climes). The die is incomplete, with dots notably absent from the script. The legend fills the entire field without a border, characteristic of the Murshidabad pattern series.
