Shah Alam II was the Mughal emperor whose reign coincided with the near-total collapse of central Mughal authority — by the 1760s, provincial mints were striking coins in his name largely as a political fiction, acknowledging nominal suzerainty while real power had shifted entirely to local rulers and the expanding East India Company. Indore's use of the Maheshwar mint reflects the Holkar dynasty's consolidation of control over the Narmada corridor during this period.
Maheshwar served as the capital of the Holkar state under Ahilyabai Holkar from 1767, which places the operation of this mint squarely within her administration — one of the more capable regional governments of the late 18th century.
