Kishangarh was among the smaller Rajput princely states in what is now Rajasthan, and its coinage during Sardul Singh's reign reflects the awkward transition period following the Crown's assumption of authority from the East India Company in 1858. Many smaller states continued striking their own silver well into the 1880s under treaty arrangements that technically permitted local coinage while British Indian rupees steadily displaced it in actual commerce. By the time this issue was produced, such coins were already losing ground to the standardized colonial currency in daily trade.
