The central register carries the imperial name and title of the Mughal emperor Rafi-ud-Darjat, 'Shah of Shahs, Exalted of Rank,' rendered in deeply struck, fluid script. Floral or pellet ornaments punctuate the field between registers. The legends fill the entire coin face to the rim, consistent with standard Mughal hammered rupee typology. The surfaces show the characteristic irregular flan shape of hand-struck coinage. |

Rafi-ud-Darjat reigned for roughly three months in 1719 — one of four emperors to occupy the Mughal throne that single year, each installed and disposed of by the Sayyid Brothers, the kingmaker nobles who effectively controlled the empire. Whether this piece was struck before or after his deposition in June of that year is difficult to determine with certainty, making the regnal year attribution itself a point of scholarly interest.
