| Obverse description | Hammered silver rupee struck in the name of the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II. The obverse field is dominated by bold Naskh-style Arabic calligraphy arranged in three horizontal registers, reading '١١٧ / شاہ عالم / بادشاہ غازی' (year fragment / Shah Alam / Badshah Ghazi). The lettering is deeply struck and slightly irregular in placement, characteristic of Maratha feudatory hammered coinage. The flan is slightly irregular with a raised rim formed naturally by the striking process. |
