1 Rupee - Munassar 10mm Countermark on KM#458

The Qu'aiti Sultans of Hadhramaut — operating out of Mukalla and Shihr on the southern Arabian coast — relied heavily on the Maria Theresa Thaler and Indian Rupee as trade currency, countermarking existing British Indian coinage to assert local authority over circulation. The "Munassar" punch, a 10mm applied mark, identifies this piece as having passed through that administrative process, likely in the late nineteenth century as the Qu'aiti consolidated control over rival Kathiri-held territories in the Hadhramaut interior.

The underlying host coin is a Victorian Rupee of the KM#458 type. Countermarked Indian silver of this kind remains genuinely scarce — most pieces circulated to destruction in a region with little tradition of coin preservation.
