The lower portion of the field features a sweeping calligraphic flourish characteristic of the Durrani mint style. Mahmud Shah's first reign over Afghanistan lasted only from 1800 to 1803, when his brother Shuja ul-Mulk seized the throne. These rupees straddle that dynastic rupture — some struck while Mahmud held Kabul, others after he retreated to Herat and continued issuing coinage as a regional claimant rather than a sovereign of the whole Durrani Empire. The Herat mint designation is therefore not incidental; it marks a political fracture.
