| Obverse description | The State Emblem of Sri Lanka depicted in full, centrally positioned in the field. The emblem features a golden lion passant holding a sword, set within a series of concentric decorative rings. A Dhamma Chakra (Wheel of the Law) surmounts the emblem at the top, while a traditional oil lamp (punkalas) occupies the base, flanked by petals of the blue lotus, the national flower. A crescent moon and a sun symbol appear at either side of the base on a stepped platform, with the entire design rendered in high relief against a flat field. |

Sri Lanka's shift to nickel clad steel for the rupee in this period was driven by the same economic pressures affecting central banks across South Asia in the 1990s — rising nickel and copper costs made the older cupronickel composition increasingly untenable at face value. The magnetic core made the new coins immediately distinguishable from earlier issues and caused intermittent problems with coin-operated machinery across the island that had been calibrated for non-magnetic flans.
