Additional information

Islam Shah Suri ruled the Sur Empire following his father Sher Shah's death in 1545, and spent much of his reign consolidating control against challenges from his own nobility and rival Suri claimants. The Gwalior mint was among the more productive of the Sur administrative centers — the fortress city had been taken from the Mughals in 1540 and its mint put to immediate use financing Sur campaigns. Islam Shah died in 1553, triggering a succession crisis that fragmented the empire within three years and allowed Humayun to retake Delhi.
