Fateh Singh ruled Jind from 1819 to 1822, a period when the Sikh Confederacy's smaller princely states were navigating the tightening grip of the East India Company's subsidiary alliance system. Jind had accepted British protection as early as 1809 under the Treaty of Amritsar, which formalized George Metcalfe's efforts to check Ranjit Singh's southward expansion. Coins struck under Fateh Singh thus occupy an awkward political moment — nominally sovereign issues from a state that had already ceded its foreign policy to Calcutta.
The weight standard here aligns with the Nanakshahi rupee tradition common to Sikh-influenced states rather than the Company's emerging uniform coinage.
