The FAO series coins were issued by India beginning in the 1970s as part of a United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization global campaign encouraging member nations to mint coins themed around food security and agricultural development. India participated extensively, producing numerous denominations across several decades. This particular rupee dates to a period when India had achieved near self-sufficiency in food grain production following the Green Revolution — a stark reversal from the famine conditions and PL-480 food aid dependency of the 1960s.
