India's Reserve Bank periodically commissioned experimental strikings to test alloy compositions and planchet specifications before committing to full production runs. The 1985 one-rupee experimental pieces were never intended for general circulation — they exist as internal reference strikes, which explains why survivors surface almost exclusively through institutional dispersals rather than from pocket change.
KM#79.1 distinguishes this from the standard circulation type by planchet tolerances documented during the testing phase at the Bombay or Calcutta mint.
