The 1975 International Women's Year coin was part of a coordinated global push by the United Nations, which had designated 1975 as IWY and encouraged member states to issue commemorative coinage. Nepal's participation was notable given that women in the country would not gain meaningful legal property rights until reforms decades later — the commemorative gesture and the domestic legal reality were sharply at odds.
