Khairpur was among the few Sind princely states to retain meaningful autonomy after the British conquest of Sind in 1843, largely because Mir Ali Murad Khan had cooperated with — some would say actively aided — Sir Charles Napier's campaign against his own relatives. The coinage issued between 1843 and 1849 reflects that ambiguous status: locally struck silver circulating under a ruler who owed his throne to British military force but was permitted to maintain the outward apparatus of sovereignty, including his own mint.
The arrangement ended in practice well before Khairpur's formal absorption. By the 1850s British Indian currency had displaced local issues in most commercial transactions.
