Amanullah Khan came to power in 1919 following the assassination of his father Habibullah and immediately launched the Third Anglo-Afghan War, forcing Britain to relinquish control over Afghan foreign affairs through the Treaty of Rawalpindi. These rupees were struck during his early reformist program, which included attempts to modernize the Afghan monetary system along lines influenced by his diplomatic overtures to both Soviet Russia and Weimar Germany — unusual alliances for the period.
The .900 silver standard adopted here mirrored the coinage conventions of neighboring British India, a pragmatic acknowledgment of cross-border trade realities even as Amanullah was politically distancing Afghanistan from British influence.
